Woman won't let disability keep her from weight-loss goal

Hitting the gym to lose weight and gain strength is rough for anyone. But one woman who's done just that faces an extra challenge when she exercises: she can only use the upper half of her body.

The next time you do sit-ups, think of Emily Christensen. She would love to be able to do them on her own but can't.

"On the way home from a golf course, I got in an accident and broke my back," she explains.

That was 16 years ago. Emily has been in a wheelchair ever since. Slowly, she began to put on weight.

"[At] my heaviest I was 300 pounds. That was in 2004," Emily says.

So, she started moving more, eating better, and lost 50 pounds on her own. But then went back to school for a masters and gained weight back.

"A year ago is when I started at the wellness center," Emily says.

Neuroworx Wellness Center in South Jordan is a gym for people in wheelchairs and those who have nerve damage.

"I lift weights, and I use a machine called The New Step," Emily says. The machine works her upper body.

Emily doesn't have a personal trainer, just some assistance when needed.

"The rest of us have our bodies. We have our legs, which are large muscles that burn a lot of calories; she's had to do that just using her upper body," sayd Dr. Dale Hull, co-founder of the Nueroworx Wellness Center.

Another challenge Emily faces because of the accident is her body overheats easily, so she can't push it too hard. She says even when she doesn't feel like going to the gym, she does, and it's paying off.

"The other day, I weighed and I was 199 -- passed off that 200!" Emily says.

But she's not done yet.

"I still want to lose another 40 pounds, get stronger and be able to get around better," she says.

Emily is on a local wheelchair tennis team too. She says NBC's Biggest Loser show inspired her to get moving, and still inspires her!

If you're inspired too, experts recommend you talk with your doctor before you start any exercise or diet regime.

The View host and author of The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide Elisabeth Hasselbeck knows the challenges of being a working mom.

New Years Weight Loss Plan

New Years Weight Loss Plan: "Every year, from November to December, people eat, eat and eat. After 2 months of binging on every cake, candy and turkey meal, they realize that they have put on a few extra pounds. Does this sound like you? Well, here is a New Years weight loss plan that will help you to shed those extra pounds.

Weight is lost by two different methods. Either you reduce your calorie intake to less than what you are burning off, or you increase the amount of calories that you are burning by exercising to more calories than you take in. The math is simple, but dieting can be hard work. Especially if you have a sweet tooth or are just used to eating whatever you want. But, you should not be afraid to try to put together a New Years weight loss plan that will benefit you, not only now, but in the future.

Some of the considerations you should think about are:

Set a clear weight loss goal - You cannot reach what you cannot see. If you set a goal of losing 20 pounds in the next 4 months, you will have a target and will be able to break down that goal into smaller 'bites.' Without a goal, you would just be shooting for the stars.

Do not turn to starvation or fasting diets - Your body is a machine that takes fuel to run efficiently. If you do not feed the machine, it will actually slow down your metabolism and hurt your weight loss. Rather than stop eating, eat smaller meals more frequently. That way, your body will consistently burn calories, rather than have giant swings.

Drink plenty of water - Your body is made of over 60% water. If your body gets dehydrated, your metabolism will also slow down. Water also will act as a appetite suppressant. And if you are thinking of taking any weight loss pills, you will need to make sure your body's water level is replenished.

Find a good diet resource and stick to it - There are a lot of diets available, but you need to find the one that works for you. There are ones that include a lot of exercise, and ones that revolve around eating the right foods. Pick the right one for your goal and situation and you will have a better chance of success.

If you take these few considerations into mind for your New Years weight loss plan, you will have a better chance of being successful and hitting your goals. Keep in mind, you are not the only one who has put on a few extra pounds, and you won't be the only one dieting in January. Here's to your success!

Dieting and Weight Loss

If you fail to shed the excess pounds you are packing, you are leaving yourself open to conditions like diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, and even some forms of cancer.

This is one incredible spectrum that you do not want to ignore, and certainly one that you do not want to be a part of. But only is you take steps, and you take them early enough.

Your own body metabolism, your rate of food digestion and energy consumption patterns, is different from that of the other person.

This is why your weight loss regimen does not have to be the same.

Remember that it is physically impossible to lose more than 900g (2lb) of body fat in a week.

You should consult a specialist who will guide you through the process that is best suited for your own body when you are about to begin your own weight loss program.

Strategic Weight Loss and Ideal Weight

Set a goal weight when you decide to lose weight. Try dieting in phases to prevent your body from enterint starvation mode when it attempts to stay at your ideal weight.

It is unfortunate that a lot of people sit and moan about their conditions, and end up doing nothing about it.

Plus sized folks for instance may realize the fact that they need to do something about the way they look, and some of them do

But a good number merely continue to agree with you, and yet they take no steps and end up still looking and being the same ten years down the line.

High blood pressure is something that most overweight people have to deal with. This is coupled with being prone to heart conditions and even diabetes.

To get rid of the problems, they must find a way to lose the heaviness in their bodies. The consequence of failure is an unhealthy life, or an untimely death.

Losing weight

This can be done by reducing the daily intake by 500 calories per day (it will provide a deficit of 3500 calories per week).

To lose 2 pounds per week, a deficit of 1000 calories per day is required.

Chronic illness can also cause you to lose weight.

As a matter of fact, I know of a guy who, understanding that he was prone to a certain feverish relapse every other month, he would eat himself to substantial fat prior to that. Months later, when he fell ill, he would lose all that weight in a couple of days. Cute idea, but don’t try it at home.

Some people rely on illness to help them lose weight. While this is fair enough the first time around, you shouldn’t make a habit of it.

Getting used to such could result in some kind of ‘cry-wolf’ syndrome in which you might not recover from the illness soon enough. In the end, you lose.

Successful Weight Loss Per Week

No one needs to teach anybody how to gain weight; for most people it comes naturally. Losing weight on the other hand is a feat that many find difficult to perform on their own.

When faced with doctor’s orders, they try out for a while, but many give up before they get there. Don’t be like such people.

It’s very important to do all you can to lose weight, especially if you are concerned about your self confidence.

In order for exercise to be helpful in weight loss, you should strive for a minimum of five 30 minute sessions per week.

Losing too much weight is asking for trouble. Although excess fat is bad for your body, some amount of fat is necessary for complete body functions.

Anything under the clinical limits will result in side effects that may not be too favorable.

The ideal weight-loss diet eliminates excess fat but not muscle, which requires moderate diet restriction and increased physical activity.
